What does your day look like in retirement?

Anonymous
My DH + I are about at the point of retiring. I am wondering what I would do all day. I have had a "help other people job" for the last 15 years, so I am not interested in volunteering. What do you do all day while retired?

My dad sleeps in a few days a week. A few days he volunteers at an animal shelter and he manages finances for some people. He takes a lot of classes—language, cooking, flowers. He goes to the grocery store every day and cooks a nice dinner each night. He sits on the deck and watches his grandkids play before giving them whatever treat they’ve requested from him. He goes to a different doctor each week.

If you are single, please also chime in. That part if retiring has me nervous (not OP)

Bike, pickle ball, swim, walk or some form of exercise is morning. Shower. Lunch at home or with friend and/or husband. Nap/read, do things I need to do. Rest again. Dinner. Read/tv/socialize. Bed.
I’m married with 4 grandkids. My world stops and my only is the kids when we are together.
We eat healthy.
Life is good.

OP, what do your weekends look like?

We are retired. We wake up together each morning, some mornings we have sex, then coffee on the deck. We work out together every day and do various chores around the house. Sometimes we have sex in the afternoon after our workout and lunch.

We take a lot of classes, walk and hike a lot, spend time with our grandkids, and we’ve started to travel a bit as Covid eases and intend to travel a lot more in the coming years. We really enjoy being together and it is like a second honeymoon for us. The sacrifices of our working years have definitely been worthwhile in our estimation.

2 dogs that need walking, feeding, and we love animals. Pandemic changed everything and we only have started to do normal things in thd last 6 month- what we would have done if not for the lifestyle change.

We love reading and research, visiting with friends, neighbors, cooking, light travel, some TV, not a lot. I am active in political and regional food insecurity groups. I also paint. When this covid and flu surge dies down, we love theater and concerts. We do our own house cleaning and repair. We hike, take drives.

We get up around 6 am. We are both naturally morning people. What we do depends on the day. We go grocery shopping every Tuesday morning. I teach yoga on Mon/Wed/Fri mornings. We typically go to the gym together in the morning. Sometimes we go out to lunch. We play Pickleball on Tues/Thurs/Sat late afternoons. I am in a book club. We both volunteer at the hospital several days a week. We also play golf, kayak, hike, and sail. We travel some, but we both love to be at home. We spend time with our adult kids and our grandkids.

We are both 55. Still very healthy and active. I was worried retirement might be boring, but we stay really busy. The difference is, we get to decide what we do with our time.

This is what your retirement will look like

More time for all of it. Longer trips, whenever you want. Movies in the middle of the day, any day. Easy to fit in a daily workout.

+1 except the grandkids part. We don't want any for a while because our kids would be college aged when we plan on retiring.

If I had a lot of time, I would probably work out more, which would help reduce my cholesterol and high blood pressure.

I would ..

-wake up later
-have a leisurely breakfast and coffee
-go swimming and then shower OR work in my yard and then shower
-go to the grocery store and buy fresh everything and cook a lovely meal with my spouse

That would be the "most days".

We would also travel a lot.

I am hoping we will be able to retire in four years when my youngest goes to college. We will be mid 50s/early 60.
