Repainting MDF cabinets?

Can MDF cabinets (kitchen and bathroom) be repainted? Can it be a diy job for an unexperienced Diyer, or only for professionals? Or conversely, will a professional just tell me to replace the cabinets?

Check YouTube. There are definitely people who do it, involves prep and solvent based primer.
