Fenty booed at Dunbar HS Graduation

Very sad since this administration has done more in the last 4 years for DC publics than has been done in the last 40 years. Change from the status quo was never going to be painless. I salute the mayor for trying. DC is a better place because of Fenty carrying on in the Tony Williams tradition of trying to create a world class city. Do you people realize that the capital city of the USA is a 3rd or 4th class international city. It's not even in the top tier in our country. Do you have any pride in where you live? If you just moved here in the last 5 years I guess you don't realize where we came from.

The story says there was confusion about who was to be the keynoter. Vince Gray, a Dunbar graduate, gave a welcoming speech, then left, and Fenty, to "cheers and some boos" gave the keynote. With that as context, it sounds like the boos may have been disappointment that the Dunbar grad was not keynoter, rather than a judgment of Fenty's stint as Mayor.

When I graduated from high school the students chose the keynote speaker. The students at Dunbar wanted an accomplished gradute of Dunbar High and invited him. The New York organization appointed by Michelle Rhee to operate the school wanted exposure for Fenty and invited Fenty over the wishes of the students. Politics as usual. And why is the chancellor turning schools over to private organizations. I thought she said she could turn the shools around.

BTW--your histrionics on every post about Fenty is geting old. We all have views of Fenty, some will agree with you and others will not. He is not a messiah, as you would want people to believe. I have lived in this city as an adult far more than the five years you suggest. Believe me Fenty was not the architect of the city's transformation. When he took office in 2007, Anthony Williams left him with a billion dollar surplus plus reserves. Now all the money is gone and no money for rainy days. the city is talking about furloughing public safety workers and giving teachers a twenty-percent raise. How is that for management of the city's funds. Now before you start screaming it's not his fault, remember your arguments about Clinton leaving Bush a surplus in funds and how it was blown.

I know, right? Geez, the sky isn't going to fall if Fenty isn't running around with scissors and shovels. Cory Booker he's not.

Dunbar has been through a lot. If Fenty thought he was going to get as warm a welcome as Gray, he's more naive and egocentric than I thought. There are many, many prominent alums of Dunbar. Some of whom will be class of 2010.

Thank u for setting things straight. For those looking from the outside things look great but when u work in this mess Fenty has made u know the truth. Fenty wants to use the school system as his way to keep his seat but let's not forget those teachers who lost their jobs over the budget bundles. And how about all of the agency layoffs but now u want to give teachers another raise. Maybe you haven't heard the rest of have a freeze on pay increases! Century just raised the teachers play to $90k! Now he wants to add 21%! Wake up people. This isn't right.

I've been at two events in the last 6 weeks where Fenty was booed, I figured it was a regular occurence.

I have not been at any Fenty events, but I informally count yard signs as I drive around, and I usually see at least as many Gray signs as Fenty signs, which says more than you might think, since I live in Fenty's home Ward 4. Has anyone else been watching signs?

I live in a Ward3 and it is overwhelmingly in Fenty's favor. A few Gray signs but very few and far between.
