Does ASL count as a foreign language?

Anonymous
For college admissions? I am seeing conflicting information online. Or does it depend on the university? Thanks.

My son is talking ASL. It is college/university dependent. Here is a list from a few years ago.

It's considered a language, not a foreign language (as it's AMERICAN sign language). However, a recent article published pushed many universities to recognize ASL as a language to fulfill the foreign language requirement.

College dependent. Biggest issue may not be whether it “counts” for admission, but whether it’s taught at the college and you kid can continue it if they have not completed their language requirement at the college level will the college make them start over.
