Middle school articulation - what are teacher recommendations used for?

Anonymous
Our school sent a middle-school articulation chart with various dates. One column states, "Teacher recommendations due by ..."

What are teacher recommendations used for in terms of MS articulation? This is for a regular school, not a magnet program.

But isn’t that supposed to be how math placement occurs? If that’s the case, then why are teacher recs used at all?
