Do knife preferences change over time, especially with growth?

DS12 is really into cooking. I would like to get him a nice chef’s knife for Christmas. My plan is to take him to Williams Sonoma and let him pick. But I am wondering if his preferences will change as his hands grow. He’s still pretty early puberty so he has a lot of growing to come.

I would look at a small (6") German chef's knife or a Japanese petty knife or both. Probably his preferences will change as he gets older but those are all-around knives that he can use forever, even if he eventually prefers something else. Fwiw, both DH and I use the 5" Japanese petty knife every day.

No I am asking if they might be different when he’s 16.

I assume that he will be able to buy something different as an adult.
