| Just got his first joband will be moving to a new area. He was some things from college living but not much. |
| What is his living situation? What is your budget? |
|
If you have a lot of budget, a decent sofa and rug (let him pick it out)
Less budget, a Dyson stick vac, a bucket and a pack of microfiber rags Less budget, some decent stainless flatware (IKEA is great) and 6-8 glasses. If you are at IKEA also get a Toftbo bathmat or two. Less budget, Target Threshold Performance Sheets for whatever size bed he will have. |

My DD recently moved out to a new area. She has roommates so didn't need to provide everything, but this is what we got for her room. Bed, dresser, nightstand, desk (she will be WFH most time), curtains. Storage containers/bins for closet. Over the door racks.
One of the roommates had furniture and kitchen supplies, so didn't need to buy any of that stuff. We did buy the bathroom items (shower curtain, liner, bath mats, etc). Honestly, it felt like buying for college again. Will he have his own place or sharing? |
| We furnished do new place as a grad present. Basics, they don’t need fancy stuff. |
|
Will you help him to move out?
Make a list of what is needed to set up a residence - kitchen, dining, bedding, bathroom, furniture, clothes maintainence, personal grooming, electronics, cleaning supplies, closets, clothes and shoes organizers, lunch box, potable coffee containers, food supplies, etc. Then look at what he already has and what the apartment will provide. Provide for things that he does not have. Simple. On that vain - laundry supplies - detergent, softener, stain remover, hangers, laundry basket, iron, starch spray, ironing board, repair kit - needle thread scissors). |
Reading is fundamental..UGH! Just realized you said gift. I "gifted" her a juicer. I also think a set of the no touch stainless steel trashcans is a nice gift (didn't realize how expensive they were.) |
| My DS recently moved after staying with us for six months, and he recently graduated from UVA in May '22. He gets a very good paying remote job, 150K/yr, and he is moving to Boca Raton FL. I bought DS a Tesla Model 3 as a departing gift and included a one year of car insurance. |
How nice. |
| We gave a cast iron pan, oil for it, and a couple of things for scrubbing it. |
| Unless they are a bit older, I would not get nice furniture necessarily for young people. They tend to be quite transient, and move a lot. I had ikea furniture for a while, until I bought a house with my then fiancee (now spouse). Maybe a quality bed and a big TV, but anything else won't be worth it for very young adults. |
Amazon gift card so he can buy what's needed. |
| Most of the stuff needed to set up a residence will come from our home. I have extras of everything so when my kids will leave we will have tons of stuff to give them. We will certainly buy them the furniture and set up their apartment so that it is nice looking, comfortable, safe and functional. Are they renting or did they buy a condo? |
Grad school would have been a better gift. |
Still has 200K left in his 529 savings. |
