I am 60 and would like to eat with chopsticks. Friends attempts to teach me has not worked because it just feels very odd. Anyways, can someone recommend a tried and tested "adult training chopstick"?

you may just need to practice a lot more than others.
My (white) DH learned how to use it from cover of one of those cheap wooden disposable chopsticks you get at cheap take outs. The cover had directions on them. Or try going to youtube. Just practice more. |
Yes! I also wanted to learn to use chopsticks! I am very bad at fine motor skills. I went on Amazon and bought chopsticks for kids - they have finger loops, so your fingers HAVE to be in the right places to use them. I eat at LEAST one meal a day with them to practice. I hand wash them. Would link but can't find - any that are connected at top and have finger loops will work. |
There are several training chopsticks for adults. Different styles work better for different people.

How I as a white male learned was to keep my middle finger on my dominant hand straight and with the inner part of my thumb press the bottom chopstick firmly against my middle finger. Then take the top chopstick and hold it as you would a pencil. The TOP chopstick is the only one that moves. Then using your writing style make upper case Is again and again. This is the movement used to grab food. It works for me. |
Watch youtube, practice practice, practice picking things up. Ask some chopstick users. Ask the waiting staff in the restaurants that use them.

It's not that hard. You really only need to move one chopstick. Tuck one of the sticks between your thumb and index finger, the other one you hold like a pencil. You only move the one that you hold like a pencil while the other remains anchored when trying to grab stuff. Give it 10-20 minutes per day of practice. You can probably get the muscle memory down in a few days. |
