Will the $10-20K student debt relief happen? Not interested in whether you think it should.

Not whether it should; just whether it will.

No, it's not a big political issue but it's enough where R's won't allow it to happen and D's will just let the issue drop, probably because Americans don't like seeing other people get a specific dollar amount benefit. I think student loan repayment will never happen again and the next move will be speeding up the timeline for PSLF to 5 years and IBR/PAYE total forgiveness to 10 years.

Interesting thoughts.

Debt forgiveness may not happen; hopefully, the current administration will extend repayment & interest accrual moratorium until end of Presidential term--will be especially helpful if a recession occurs.

A big NOPE from me.

Another no

No. But maybe the repayment forgiveness will be extended. We just need about 6 more months beyond the current extension, so here’s hoping….

This. I don’t think it will happen but in place of outright forgiveness the repayment and interest accrual moratorium will be extended through the end of Biden’s first term and maybe through the second term.

It will not. The current program will be struck down by the Supreme Court as an improper use of executive power, and there aren't the votes in Congress to pass it legislatively (and that's before considering the incoming GOP-contrpolled House).

This is the credited response.

What’s TLS? I see this and think “Times Literary Supplement.”

I agree on all of this but Biden has an ace in his sleeve in the hole of the authority he *didn’t*use for this—the Secretary’s broad authority to compromise and settle, which is much more permissive than HEROES. He could do it that way; it all depends on the organizing.

Now that the election is over, they will probably drop it.

+1 it was never going to get through the courts. Biden knew it but wouldn't but wanted to be elected. The repayment pause has been extended while the court case is ongoing.

Student Loan Payment Pause Extended
The student loan payment pause is extended until the U.S. Department of Education is permitted to implement the debt relief program or the litigation is resolved. Payments will restart 60 days later. If the debt relief program has not been implemented and the litigation has not been resolved by June 30, 2023 — payments will resume 60 days after that. We will notify borrowers before payments restart.

Curious that none of the responses here actually look at the text of the HEROES act. I'm very curious if the supreme court will rule the same.
