What songs does your toddler like?

Mine loves will.I.am’s Move It and we have all sorts of silly dance parties. But I want to mix it up! What are other fun dance party songs for a 2.5 year old? She doesn’t really know any Disney songs yet. Thanks for your ideas!

We do a lot of folk songs in this house, mostly because those are the ones I know how to sing. Right now top favourites are: pop goes the weasel, we wish you a merry Christmas, and twinkle twinkle little star.

My youngest’s (3) playlist right now:

Everything by Lori Berkner Band, but particularly We Are the Dinosaurs

Parry Gripp- It’s Raining Tacos, Hailing Taquitos, Space Unicorn…he has lots of earworms!

Axel F- Crazy Frog

Ghostbusters theme song

Blippi - the whole Vehicles album

Kiboomers- Party Freeze Dance / Floor is Lava

As for “real” songs, my kids love Shut Up and Dance. I didn’t love them learning “shut up” as a phrase, but it hasn’t been an issue. We also turn on disco and funk a lot, like Boogie Wonderland, Boogie Shoes, etc.

I Don't Want to Live on the Moon and Rainbow Connection -- these have been favorites since forever and she will ask to watch the videos or have us sing them at least a few times a week.

Kiboomers stuff and all the Freeze dances.

She likes classical music. She takes a ballet class and she really loves the music from the Nutcracker, Cinderella, and Swan Lake. She likes us to put it on and then she'll do ballet around the house. She also really likes classical in the car for some reason, I think it's relaxing. In the car we either do the classical music station or a kid's podcast, and she's happy.

Interestingly, she does not like most Disney music. She actively dislikes the movie Encanto, for instance. She doesn't hate the Bruno song but she doesn't love it and would never request that we put it on. Actively dislikes the other music from that movie, which I think she finds too sad with too much family conflict (it really bothers her how the treat both the main character and Bruno, and I don't think the way it is resolved or the apologies offered feel sufficient to her). Moana is too scary to her (the monster island is way too much) so she's not into that music either. The Disney/Pixar movies she's liked don't tend to have catchy music: Raya and the Last Dragon, Inside Out, Cars.

She likes a lot of "our" music. She freaking loves Waxahatchee and will request Lilacs as a bedtime song often. Loves the Beatles, especially Yellow Submarine. Recently I played some Rosalía for her and she was into it, I might play some more flamenco for her, or maybe introduce her to Shakira.

She much prefers songs sung by women and will get annoyed if we are listening to too many "boy songs." Which I think is great, honestly, because it gives us an excuse to play lots of different female artists for her. She likes Courtney Barnett and Phoebe Bridgers for now. I am trying to get her into Heart to mix up her genre interests a bit because while I love indie rock I think it's important to branch out.

Katy Perry makes very kid friendly music that is fun to sing along to.

Eh, I think it just depends a bit on age (an 18mo and an almost 3 yr old are really different) and also on temperament. My kid loved all of those songs too, but started to branch out a bit after attending preschool and getting exposed to more.

Blippi Excavator song and the Little Baby Bum song about crossing the street. Both are jams, I’m not mad about it.
