I work for a private tutoring company and some of my juniors are devastated! Money was refunded Nov. 15th, but students just got the notice and don't have time to register for a new site. Ugh!
Who else had a student register at GHS Saturday? |

Somebody shared the information here on November 16: https://www.dcurbanmom.com/jforum/posts/list/1094514.page#23779526
But that's really awful for your students if they just got the notice now. |
That was me who shared the information. Looking back, I should have written the same Subject this OP did. But, yes. Gaithersburg was canceled at least a couple weeks ago. We were never notified. No one was notified that it was canceled. Nobody received an email saying it was canceled. My DD only found out because a friend of hers mentioned it. I guess her dad was proactive in clicking that link to see if a testing site had been canceled? Thankfully, we were able to reschedule to a different location. I made sure to tell other friends and posted it here. I am assuming more people will find out in the next few days that Gaithersburg has been canceled and unfortunately for them, it will be too late to change locations. |
| Devastated? Really? Don’t you think that’s a little dramatic? |
| It stinks but this happened like 6 times to my 2021 graduate |
A. That was height of the pandemic. Cancellations at that point weren't unheard of. B. When your 2021 graduate's SAT was canceled, were they notified immediately? If the cancellation happened 3 weeks before exam date, were they notified then or did they find out a few days before the test were to take place? What is devastating about this cancellation - it happened 3 weeks ago and no one was notified! That testing center never bothered to email the test takers that the Dec 3 test was canceled. It sounds like people were just notified today (is that true, OP? The students just got notified today?) That doesn't give them time to switch to a different location. Now, they have to wait until March. It just sucks for them that they spent all this time preparing for the exam, making plans to take the exam this Saturday and only a few days before the exam, they find out it was canceled 3 weeks ago. That is the problem. |

It’s a ridiculous system.
Thanks to the PP who shared a while back! I never would have known otherwise. Maybe they sent emails to students? I got an email confirming registration, but still nothing about cancellation. Because of your earlier post my kid was able to register for a different location, so it isn’t a big deal to us now, but it would have been really frustrating otherwise. College Board should have some obligation beyond refunding the original fee. It’s not right to expect people to monitor a website for cancellations, find alternate locations, and pay late registration fees, because they canceled. |
PP here. Kids of 2021 drove out of state and spent the night in hotels to find out their SAT was canceled the next day. Mine had to wake up at 5 to go to an out of state testing center- 7th and only time she was able to take it. |
| PP - I mean literally some people found out when the doors to the school were locked. I understand it stinks but you have to roll with the punches. |
NP - Just because things used to be worse doesn’t excuse incompetence today. This is no way to run things. Being in education or a non-profit isn’t license for bad management. |
I should add - assuming what’s reported here is true that students were not notified. I have no first hand knowledge of that. |
OP here. Thanks pp, and to all the pp's. YES -- College Board said the students should have noticed on Nov. 15th because the money was refunded to their parents accounts. WTF!!!!! I don't track my bank account like that, and it's mine. The students don't have access to their parents bank accounts. |
I am the OP, and I can tell you that 2 of my students were not notified. It is no way to run a business that has taken over so much of this high school to college experience for their own profit. |
PP here and I agree. And the CB just posted on FB: “Please keep an eye on the Test Center Closings page for December SAT updates. This page will be more timely than email, text, and account/admission ticket updates. Check this page before heading to the test tomorrow morning. http://spr.ly/6186MC4GA” I don’t know why they can’t generate emails quickly to impacted students. When my DC’s ACT test site was canceled (at least for my DC), we received an email with a reassignment to the next closest site and option to switch location and/or date at no charge. |
My point is the companies have always treated people horribly too little competition. I’m sorry that happened to your child but it’s not uncommon unfortunately. |
