Bugs in food

Anonymous
I found a restaurant near me that makes really good tofu but my broccoli had a bug in it last time. Like a gross bug. I love this place so much, they are so friendly when I come in. How do I get over the bug? Do I tell them so they wash their vegetables better? I know bugs are in food but I didn't want to see it, I'd rather eat it unknowingly.

stop going to that place. i read it somewhere that each of us eat about 2lb of bugs every year (yes, unknowingly). but i understand what you are saying. those eyes... ugh.

YMMV op, but to me a bug in food is an indication of general lack of attention to sanitation. I don’t what “bug” you got in your broccoli, but it means either the vegetables are not washed well, or that it got there after it was washed or even worse during/after food preparation. Personally, I wouldn’t go back, but you could give them another chance and if you do, then definitely tell the manager that you got a bug in the broccoli last time you ordered.

Bugs in vegetables are a part of life, I suppose. Especially broccoli. I went to the Giant and bought cilantro, put it in my fridge, and when I went to cook with it the next day, there was a living ladybug in the bag.

We did a side trip from Cancun and the tour bus dropped us off at a local restaurant. along the way. I decided to look at my hamburger that I ordered and saw 3 dead flies sitting in ketchup. The rest of the trip I had only bread, eggs and beer.

Yeah, I’d give a pass on the broccoli. There is a specific bug that sometimes infests broccoli and they blend in and hide really well in the depths of the florets. Washing the broccoli doesn’t wash the away. I always dig thoroughly through broccoli before I buy it to look for them a but could totally see a restaurant not noticing

Wow, I have never found a bug in broccoli—nor searched through it. 😳Now you guys are making me think I have eaten bugs smuggled in the florets!!

Bugs aren't what I'm most concerned about. It's just a sign of a general lack of sanitation. I don't want food poisoning or some awful intestinal thing because they aren't washing their hands and everything else enough. Or ecoli, or salmonella.

Twice recently we’ve had lots of bugs in broccoli. Once from Whole Foods and once from balduccis. Both times i soaked and washed it and didn’t realize there were bugs inside. Had I had the broccoli in a dish or in a sauce, I don’t think I would have noticed. I was actually so disgusted that I’ve only been buying frozen, cut up broccoli now

I found a bug once in a brussel sprout. It happens, just like the occasional hair. Remove and carry on.

I usually just notice it in organic broccoli. So now I buy conventional.
