My son is very strong academically and is being recruited to play his sport at an independent school. We have no idea what this might look like financially, but the coach has made his interest clear.
We also looked at Good Counsel and really liked the academic offerings, especially AP and STEM. However, it's been crickets from the coaching staff. My son did actually hear from the GC coach of his secondary sport, but nothing at all from the primary sport's staff. He's thinking about not even applying to GC because of our perception that the coach is totally uninterested. Does anyone have info on what athletic recruiting typically looks like at GC? Is it even a thing? |
| I know the lacrosse coach recruits hard. He was recruiting for GC last year while he was still coaching for and working in the admissions office of s different school. |
Thanks, that is helpful. Different sport. I'm starting to think the coach is lazy or disorganized. It's fine if he's not interested in my kid, but there's been no acknowledgment of our interest inquiry or visit to the open house and shadow day. We are wondering if it's time to move on. |
| He's just not that into you. It's okay. If he wanted you as a recruit, they would have been in contact. You can always try out and hope for the best. |
I think you are right, but there is also an element of poor management. We were definitely told that everyone the stopped at the open house table would get an email with basic info about the program. We are fine moving on without applying. We don’t have a thin skin about it. Just feeling like we wasted too much time exploring GC. At the other independent school shadow day, he was matched with an athlete for his sport, and the coach made time to meet with him. They just had it put together so well compared to GC. |
| What sport? If basketball or football I would bother. The coaches already know who they’re recruiting. |
| Just apply and see what happens. This is high school not college D1. I’m sure your son will make the team. I have several friends with kids at GC and depending on coach and sport, some coaches are just not organized or don’t recruit heavily. |

I am not the OP but have a related question.
How hard is it to get on JV or freshman teams for boys soccer and basketball? Are many students cut? (I'm guessing yes since it's a big school.) For kids who don't make the teams, are there opportunities to play recreational sports at Good Counsel? |
|
GC doesn’t give money unless you are a future NFL athlete.
It’s hard to say without knowing the sport. You should go to the best fit school. Beyond Football GC is not a top program for any sports except girls sports. The STEM program is really good though. |
Freshman soccer is very easy I’m not sure they even cut. JV most good enough players make JV because the good players go to varsity. Basketball is very hard to make and GC is not even a top program. |
So you shadowed at GC and they did not match him with a STEM athlete? |
They matched him with a STEM athlete, but not in either or the two sports he plays. Also, the kid he shadowed didn’t seem to know very many people. |
NP. I’m on a Facebook group for girls’ club sport teams. The GC coach for this girls’ team was definitely on Facebook touting scholarships for recruits a few years ago. Unless something has changed, other sports do have scholarships. |
Who they match you up with is kind of random unless you specifically request someone or unless you came from a Catholic k-8 and they’ll match you up,with someone from your school. |

That was absolutely the case with baseball. The former baseball coach did zero in terms of recruiting and showed zero interest in kids who were interested in playing at GC. Huge disappointment.
Anyhow, that coach has moved on and the new baseball coach has an outstanding reputation. However, I don't have a sense of who he is handling recruiting. |
