Would you say the Indiana University & University of Michigan experiences are similar?

Great student, great EC's, not applying to Ivy's, has grades to earn lottery ticket but not going for it. Looking for big school, great school spirit, good academics. Very taken with UofM. Seems to feel IU has similar feel? Applying OOS, EA, for both. (Just accepted to IU!)

In your case, I would say yes. I don't think there is any upside to anyone telling you what the differences are between UofM and IU if you don't get an acceptance into UofM. You will just feel bad.

So congrats on IU and be happy with that!

+10. Hutton Honors College is great at IU should your DC get into it... I can't speak to the differences though between U of M and IU. IU has a super business school and great music school. Other good departments too - public affairs, languages, etc...

They may have the same feel but they have very different reputations and attract different students. It is what it is.

Son has been admitted to Hutton and should be admitted to Kelley (exceeds requirement). Can you tell me why Hutton Honors College is great? And if you know what options there are for music (trumpet) if not in Jacobs?

For college experience itself, I don't think there's a huge difference. I went to another similar Big Ten school and think the experience at many would be comparable.

If your child plans to stay in the midwest and settle, then there's a lot more of a wow factor for those who hire undergrads if the applicant went to Michigan vs. Indiana. If your kid moves away from the midwest, or goes to grad school, or is going into a field like teaching, then it doesn't particularly matter.

Great college towns - both!

Why not add University of Wisconsin into the mix?

Congrats on IU!

Both Michigan and Indiana are excellent, spirited R1 universities in great college towns (actually, small cities) that aren't in the middle of nowhere, and that have virtually half of their student body from OOS (so your DMV kid won't feel like a complete fish out of water). Michigan is by general acclaim the best of the Big Ten publics (let's assume Northwestern is in its own category in the B1G), and Indiana is the middle of that strong pack.

If your son likes both of those, he might also want to consider Wisconsin (Madison), which ticks many of the same boxes as the other two but is generally viewed as an easier admit than Michigan but a stronger school than Indiana.

I think those are the three B1G schools that most resemble each other -- the others are kind of different, either because they're in big cities or in the middle of nowhere or have a much lower OOS ratio or traditionally have had a STEM/ag focus.

Congrats to your son! Indiana is a great school. Has he visited both campuses?

Academics aside, he'll really love Indiana if he's a basketball fan. If he's more into football, Michigan would be a great fit.

Both Ann Arbor and Bloomington are terrific college towns with a ton of school spirit. Michigan will be quite a bit more snowy and cold.

Both schools have diverse student bodies but Michigan tends to draw more New Yorkers, while Indiana attracts more students from the Chicago area.

University of Iowa, always overlooked (and a quicker and easier admit than even IU), ticks the same boxes as you've laid out for Michigan, Wisconsin & IU.

Michigan can be pickier about the students it chooses. So, job recruiters focused on credentials are more likely to give jobs to Michigan grads.

At the end of the day, however, the quality of the education available and the college experience are pretty similar.

Probably doesn't matter, but in my experience IU/Purdue people get along better than Michigan/MSU people.

They're similar in many ways but the students at Indiana are probably a little more laid back and "Midwest-nice". Michigan has a higher proportion of east-coasters, which is a slightly different vibe. That said, both schools are big enough that your son should have no trouble finding his crew.

Your child will have plenty of options.

All my dc friends who were both Hutton Honors and Kelley had multiple jobs offers by end of summer junior year. Typical elite companies like Bain and Wall Street firms.
