| What age/net worth to give up disability insurance? |
Following. I am 65, still working and need about four more years to comfortably retire. Get LT disability at work. |
| I get disability insurance through my job. I also have an old individual policy that overlaps - it is portable and has a very favorable “own occupation” feature so I’ve paid it for decades. I am only considering dropping it for the first time next year at 62 because I’m finally at the age where nonoptimal disability coverage wouldn’t impact retirement plans significantly. |
| You need it as long as you work for income and want a percentage of that income to continue even if you become unable to keep working for reasons other than retirement, resignation or termination. Once you retire and no longer have employment income, you no longer need insurance intended to replace such income in case of disability. |
