Credit for classes outside MCPS

Anonymous
Is there any possibility to get credit for a class taken outside of MCPS? It seems that there should be a process to petition for credit if the class meets a certain standard of rigor (e.g. a community college class). Is this impossible at MCPS or is there a process to make an appeal? Thanks!

If you are taking a class at Montgomery College, you actually enroll through your HS counselor in the dual enrollment program. The course and credits will automatically transfer back to MCPS and show up on the high school transcript. If it is an approved course meeting MD state HS graduation requirements it will count (e.g. English 101, certain math classes, fine arts). Otherwise it transfers as elective credit.

If you are trying to satisfy a HS graduation credit from somewhere other than MC, you would need to check first to see that the provider is approved for that course to meet state requirements. If it’s not from MC and doesn’t satisfy graduation requirements, they aren’t going to give credit because there’s no reason to.

Thank you! This is super helpful. I didn't realize this program is available to students at all high schools. Do you know if a student could enroll in this program to take a foreign language at MC that is not offered at the home school in order to fulfill the foreign language requirement?

For our kids, there was a list of allowable courses for 9th and 10th, the entire college wasn't open to them until junior (or maybe senior) year. Contact your child's counselor, or the Montgomery College and ask

My kid was out of state for mental health treatment. We were able to get all of his classes transferred back to MCPS. We worked with the school counselor.

What type of school was your child attending out of state? I called the high school and they seemed to not be very accommodating about accepting credits from outside MCPS.
