We have an 8 week old lab. We just picked her up yesterday, so last night was her first night home. She has a crate in our bedroom with a bed, blankets, and toys. We stopped food and water a couple hours before bedtime and took her out before bed. We put her in her crate when we went to bed at 11pm. We took her out for a quick pee at 2am and at 4:45am. Then she was up for the day with us at 7am, when she pooped and peed. She whined a little in her crate, but I’d estimate it was at most 20 min total throughout the night.
Is all of that typical? I certainly don’t expect that she’ll be able to hold it through the night, but I’m also not sure when we should stop waking her up to pee. From what I’ve read, puppies at her age need to be woken up or they’ll pee in their crate. |
| That was similar to our schedule the first week or so but we were not waking our puppy. He would wake up and whimper and we would run him outside asap. Would happen about twice between 10pm and 6:30am. Went down to once a night pretty quickly--I'd say by 10 weeks. Slept through at maybe 14 weeks? |
Thanks! Good to know it doesn’t last too long. |
| Normal. Our puppy is 7 months and still goes 1-2 times a night. |
Is your dog a little breed?? This isn't normal in my experience, but I have labs and shepherds. By 2 or 3 months they have slept through the night in a crate. |
Yes, little. I think some of it is because we have a small house and the dog is in the living room so they see whoever is up too. We do crate at night when we are sleeping. |
| zero times. pee before crating, pee again in the morning. we only got up if he had swallowed something bad and had to poop and he'd sort of yelp once and listen, yelp again and I'd come down and let him outside (on a leash in the night) |
| Zero times. Puppy is now 5 months, got her at 8 weeks. She is little, only 6lb now, but she held it from around midnight (when last person went to bed) until at least 6am in the first week and now will go even longer from about 11pm until around 8am. She sleeps in a crate in our room. |
| We picked our Lab puppy up at 12 weeks old. The breeder has started on crate training a few nights prior to that. We stopped food and water by 6pm and put her in her crate at 8pm. She didn't whine or cry at all which surprised me. I went downstairs to let her out at 6:30am. She's never has an accident in the crate. She's 20 weeks now and we keep the same basic schedule. |
| Zero. We would take out to pee around 11, crate him overnight and then out again at 6 am. Our guy never asked to go out and we never offered. He never had an accident in his crate. |
| I think most dogs need to be taken out once overnight until age 3-4 months, but my experience was similar to the PP above me. We took our dog out at 11 pm and he slept through the night until 7-8 am even at 8-9 weeks. And our dog is a smaller breed, 26 lbs at adult weight. As an adult he now can sleep in as long as 10 or 11 am and doesn’t even start asking to be let out until 12 noon or later. |
| I never woke up my puppy. Instead my puppy woke me up whenever she had to go. It took her (an american lab) about 6 weeks to be able to sleep through the night. |
6 weeks from when you brought her home, so she was 14 weeks old? |
Same here. I have raised six dogs from pups and only one asked to go out in the middle of the night at the very beginning. The rest slept through the night from day 1. Different breeds, small and medium. |
That's right. and I have a large breed dog. |
