Buying a car in DC from a private seller - need to take it for a new inspection?

Anonymous
I'm buying a car from a family member and it is currently registered in DC and the vehicle inspection is up to date. Do I need to take it for another inspection before I can register it in my name? I can't tell from the DMV website.

You don't need to- the inspection is valid until the expiration date on the sticker. What that means, though is that your registration and inspection dates won't line up, so you need to keep track of when your car is due for inspection. The DMV sends out reminder mailings and e-mails for the resgistration renewal, but not inpection. When they're not concurrent, it's easy to forget about the inspection date and get a $100 ticket...

Also remember that if the car already registered in DC is being transferred between spouses/domestic partners or parent/child, you will not have to pay excise tax, provided u fill out the correct form
