How serious is sleep apnea?

Anonymous
My partner has been complaining about my snoring lately and constentlym kicks me at night because it disturbs their sleep. Sometimes I do have restless sleep and feel myself gasping for air a bit. I know I need to lose weight and am working on it. I've breathed through my mouth though pretty much my entire life, because my nose always seems closed/stuffed up while I try to sleep, but snoring was never a problem. Are there any real serious health issues for sleep apnea besides high blood pressure and cardiovascular stress?

I had a friend from college who died from it.

Can you elaborate? How?

Um, cardiovascular stress IS the real, serious side effect. It’s what kills.

Apneic episodes resulting from disorder can also contribute to mortality risk. “Sleep apnea can directly cause death by a person’s breathing being infrequent enough to create immediate tissue ischemia (tissue death from lack of oxygen) in the heart and/or brain, resulting in a fatal heart attack or stroke,” Jenna Liphart Rhoads, R.N., Ph.D., and Nurse Educator at NurseTogether, tells WebMD Connect to Care.

Jo Koy does several good bits on sleep apnea and how men would rather die than get a CPAP machine. Highly recommend.

If you have sleep apnea long enough and don’t get on a cpap or other treatment, you could end up needing constant oxygen due to toxic increased levels of carbon dioxide building up in your bloodstream.

Can be life threatening. Also can lead to early onset dementia.

Lack of oxygen affects heart & brain.

No partner should be kicking you for any reason ever, let alone for something you are doing while you are sleeping.

My husband has sleep apnea. He had a sleep study and got a cpap which changed our quality of life. You are never going to lose the weight, let’s be honest.

My father had life long sleep apnea, all night long. He did have a heart attack at 55, had a pacemaker put in at 70, but never had a CPAP machine. Lived to 92.

If she is like me, she is kicking him to get him to start breathing again.
