Do shelf-stable gnocchi always taste "off"?

Or have I just been having a run of bad luck? Are there reliably good brands you can recommend? I love the concept of crisping up some gnocchi and then adding whatever else the recipe calls for, but the gnocchi are always the weak the link.

Yes. I think they always taste like play do. I buy the frozen or make my own.

I never liked the shelf kind. Texture is too firm.
