Washington Post article about Former Farquhar Administrator

As a general rule, if JS is for something, I'm against it, and if JS is against something, I'm for it. But also as a general rule, even a broken clock is right twice a day (unless it's a digital clock on 24-hour time; then it's only right once a day). I don't know which general rule to apply in this instance.

+1000 Spot on! MCPS and the Board is loosing all credibility if they won’t step aside for an independent investigation.

Just so no one forgets - the Board unanimously approved his promotion to Principal at Paint Branch. Shouldn’t they have been aware of the 18 complaints?

Sounds like central office folks didn't include info about the complaints in the materials they sent to the board. I know there were anonymous emails sent to them, but they may have been screened out.

Yes, the Washington Post reported that emails went to Board members’ emails. The Post however didn’t state whether the emails were anonymous or not, but emails disclose the sender’s email address.

As far as what records were provided to the Board when reviewing a candidate for an administrative position, shouldn’t they receive all the information available for that decision? If I was a Board member, I would want to fire the person who withheld key information that would have changed my mind about the appointment.

If Board members had the information and they chose not to either read the whole file or point blank ignored the complaints then they should resign.

Silvestre should resign no matter what. Supporting the Jackson Lewis "independent investigation" farce is disgraceful.

Silvestre and McKnight support the Jackson Lewis investigation because they have things to hide. If they didn’t, they would stop the Jackson Lewis investigation and ask the IG to investigate.

From MCEA yesterday. FYI, anyone can use the link to email all BOE members at once to demand an independent investigation.

Dear Colleagues,

A strong union means members stand up for one another. Your help is needed now.

Support your colleagues who have alleged sexual harassment by Principal Joel Beidleman. Tell the MCPS Board of Education (BOE) that we insist on an impartial and thorough investigation. Click here to send a message to the BOE. https://actionnetwork.org/letters/demand-the-boe-conduct-an-impartial-and-thorough-investigation?source=direct_link&link_id=0&can_id=b43af23d21b63b647b26edf7b4b1277b&email_referrer=email_2024169&email_subject=stand-with-your-colleagues-now

We must press for change in how MCPS operates when it comes to allegations of sexual harassment and bullying by management. If you have experienced harassment (sexual or otherwise) at work, and need help reporting these serious incidents, please contact us at takeaction@mceanea.org.

MCEA staff and governance will continue to support all MCEA members who have been impacted by the allegations against Joel Beidleman and the subsequent investigation.
We’ve made a direct request to the Montgomery County Inspector General to intervene in order to have a truly independent investigation.

Now it's time for us to tell the BOE directly we stand together.

In solidarity,
MCEA Team

It doesn’t have to admit let alone fix problems with staff because no one cares long enough to make the board experience consequences.

It's hard to "make the board experience consequences" when the pickings are so slim. Julie Yang is one of the new board members that ousted an incumbent. Look at her Twitter over the last week. Nothing, zilch about this issue. Lynne Harris beat the union-backed candidate. She "didn't see the e-mails". The other contenders that don't get elected tend to be a variety of combinations of crazy/racist/ignorant. Voters do want better board members but they have few options, and it's not hard to see why. No way I would take that job unless I was independently wealthy or retired and bored.

This! Everyone constantly shouting "Vote!" ...whole time I'm like for who? nobody wants this job! I don't blame them.

The irony in my first hand experience is that Joftus was extremely proactive and effective about getting the district to deal with at least one problem principal. Based on my dealings with him, which started out of emails sent by parents, I do not believe he would have ignored the emails sent to board members. It’s a shame Julie Yang got his seat.

I applaud the MCEA for keeping the pressure on MCPS and asking for an IG investigation. However, the voice should be louder than just teachers. Students and families reporting sexual harassment and bullying have also been treated in the same fashion by MCPS as teachers. Linking these similar cases and the breadth of the history would give the MCEA a stronger voice to create the change that is needed. A toxic workplace for teachers is a toxic educational environment for children.

A broken digital clock on 24-hour time may never be right. The screen is either on and always at the wrong time, or it’s off and showing nothing.

The only way this will be handled appropriately is if the federal department of education steps in to conduct a Title IX investigation of MCPS. MCPS has legal obligations to handle these cases appropriately. If you don’t complain, they won’t investigate, and nothing will change.

Bingo. I know Janis has her critics on this board, but she's been hammering MCPS quite well on this issue.

Name one person who has done more to hold MCPS accountable than Janis...

DP. Has she done things? Yes. Are they effective? I haven't seen it. The problem is that she is the boy who cried wolf. She has expended her capital and reputation launching attacks on them for every minor thing for years and has come off as a crackpot with a vendetta, so now that there's a really serious issue where this kind of approach is needed, nobody takes her seriously.

Agree completely. We need someone who is able to bring these issues to light. Not sure why people are trying to knock her.

That's....not true. Janis was just quoted and interviewed in several news articles for this Beidleman issue. So YOU might not think highly of her but it doesn't mean no one else is listening to what she has to say.
