APS cogat tests

Which years do they do it and what is it used for?

I feel like mercifully it's not some hunger games situation like it is in surrounding places. Kids are too young to be put on some hamster wheel of academic achievement. They use it starting in 2nd grade, and the results dictated that occasionally my kid gets a harder math worksheet. I'm happy with that.

If you want a real GT program, you have to move to Fairfax or Loudoun county.

When should we expect to receive scores? My 2nd grader took it this week.

It can get them tagged gifted which means in elementary they will be clustered with other gifted kids and some additional work will be pushed in for them. That's about it. Other kids can access the work that is pushed in for the gifted kids if they show an interest or aptitude.

I did find the clustering helped in middle school more than elementary. My one kid who was not tagged gifted but is a good student ended up in some middle school classes with kids who just did not give one s**t about school at all and it was annoying for him. My other kid who was tagged gifted didn't seem to have that issue.

I just checked and I downloaded the results PDF from Parentvue in mid-January last year.

Cogat also can get you into some other programs. I know during the pandemic the John Hopkins CTY program was accepting COGAT scores

I thought they used the NNAT scores from first grade for the gifted program? My son was identified last year and we had to fill out some forms and answer questions for him to be considered and then accepted to the ‘program’ or whatever. He is supposedly already getting extra/harder work this year, but just took the CoGat last week. Maybe they bring in extra kids this way?

Any idea if past CoGAT scores are available anywhere? My older child, who was not gifted, doesn’t have anything before 2021 in her ParentVue account, it would be have been 2019 I think that she would have taken the CoGAT. Was just curious what her scores were, I don’t think I ever downloaded them.

Did kids in elementary schools take the screener or actual cogat? It is so unclear from the information from APS. Why is this so hard for them to clarify?

My kid just did it in 2nd grade, and it's 3 days of testing.
