Do deer guard/grilles work?

For a small SUV?
Has anyone had a deer encounter with a guard on their vehicle?

Those things are typically marketed as brush guards. IMHO they might reduce damage but it won't be zero. Hitting a deer at any speed results in a mess.

The only ones that are truly effective at preventing extensive damage are only made for a handful of types of vehicles. Here in the US it’s limited to Jeep Wrangler and Toyota pick-ups/4Runner/Land Cruiser, and GM, Ram and Ford full-sized pick-ups. ARB (Australian company the makes off-road products) makes a guard for each of those vehicles (and many others not found in the US) that is designed to minimize damage from striking a kangaroo at speed, which is roughly comparable to a deer.

Most of the other grill guard type products that fit typical mainstream SUV’s sold in the US are cosmetic only. They look impressive but they’re actually quite flimsy and won’t provide much in the way of protection against damage from a deer. You’ll still have lots of damage even with such a product.

I hit a deer at full speed with my minivan. It totally totaled my minivan - deer 1 - 0 minivan. It was like hitting concrete wall.

A deer ricocheted off a car in front of me and smashed my windshield. Grill would have done nothing.

Just hit a deer on Monday night. I'm anticipating the car will be totaled. I managed to slow from 60 to 45mph before impact but holy hell did the buck do massive damage. Thankfully, everyone was fine.

Deer are a menace. There’s too many of them, and they have no natural predators now in the suburbs, and they breed like crazy.

You know what places don’t have nearly as many deer collisions? Rural places where deer are hunted every year and their population is kept in check.

You build housing in territory that is a habitat for wildlife and then fault the wildlife for being a menace? Sure.
