My kid hit their face in our bed frame (he tripped running in my room, and hit the low side frame).
Well, it looks bad. Ugh. We put ice on it right away but it’s a huge mark on his cheek, by his eye. He cried for the first minute but was fine after the initial shock. I am paranoid about sending him to preschool with his face like this. Plus we have all been sick and he missed Th and Fri. So, no one has seen him since Wednesday. Now it looks suspicious, right? ![]() |
Are you worried about the injury? Do a telehealth appointment with your pediatrician. |
Just email them and say “just an FYI jake hit his face yesterday running into the corner of our bed frame. The bruise looks bad, but it doesn’t hurt anymore.” |
You are worried they will think you did it? I wouldn’t worry about that. Kids are clumsy. |
Ok this makes me feel better. He hit the bed. I saw because I was folding laundry next to my bed. He was crying hard, I went to comfort him. He had covered the spot with his hand. I said “let me check it, I won’t touch, I’ll just look.” He stopped crying, and lifted his hand.. it looked like a smack across the upper cheek. Bright red, and I worried about the bruising extending to the eye. We put icy peas on it. It could look like some kind of abusive mark; OTOH it’s a straight line, so forensically it looks like he hit something straight. Which he did. He’s asleep now and I checked it this morning. I don’t think the bruise will extend to his eye. But, the mark has widened. Either way, I think he will remember if they ask him. |
This has happened to me a few times, OP. (My second has no sense of self preservation and started walking at 9 months.) It’s guilt-inducing and freaky (what if they think I’m abusing my child?!) but just tell the preschool what happened and it’ll be fine. |
As a former preschool teacher, I agree to mention it up front, and then not worry. |
A one off is not going to raise suspicions.
One time while vacationing at a cabin my toddler fell down a low set of stairs trying to grab my camera. Left a large scab on the bridge of her nose. Of course the next day she chose not to digest blueberries and had what looked like to me jet black poop and I had to take her to the ER. The doctor asked about the scab, accepted my explanation, then I never head about it again so obviously he did not file a CPS report. |
Just mention it upfront. Our daycare used to ask if they saw anything out of the ordinary and note it, but it was more to make sure that the injury had happened prior to coming to them. |
OP one thing I do is I take pictures of injuries when they happen. It’s not really in case someone thinks I caused it, it’s more so I have a record for the pediatrician of what happened when if I need it later. |
My toddler has a real knack for bumping his face and has gone to daycare 4 or 5 times with a bruise on his face. Each time they say something immediately when we drop him off ! but it is always for their own liability - they want to make sure we will not say it happened at daycare!
I don’t think you need to worry about this |
So you're not worried about your child who is injured, you're worried what people will think about you? Did I get that right? |
I highly doubt you got that right. |
Sadly if OP is a POC she may have reason to be concerned. |
You got it so wrong. Daycares are mandated reporters so if they suspect abuse or neglect they must report it to CPS. OP must be worried that it will be viewed as abuse or neglect. |
