My DD is 8 weeks and today I remembered that I’m supposed to be giving her vitamin D drops. She’s my second baby and life has been hectic but I feel so dumb. She is combo-fed and probably gets half her intake from formula, so she gets some vitamin D that way. Is this likely to harm her that I didn’t do the drops for her first 2 months of life? |
I’m not a pediatrician, but humans existed for thousands of years before vitamin D drops. Your kid is probably fine. |
No one got any vitamin D drops until <20 years ago. The vast majority of babies were totally fine. Rickets is very rare. Anecdotally my babies got very erratic vitamin D and were both totally fine. |
I’m sure it’s fine, just confess to the pediatrician in case they want to test the levels. |
Its all good. Vit D is more critical for winter babies dur to lakc of sun. Esp of she gets formula. Its much mroe of a confern for EBG babies. |
The formula is giving her what she needs. She's getting the best of both worlds with the combo. And of course, it can't hurt to let the sun reach her skin for a few minutes a day. |
Never did it with babies 2 & 3. |
It's not just about rickets. Vitamin D is involved int he formation of myelin nerve sheaths, which are damaged in multiple sclerosis. The rates of multiple sclerosis are higher the further you get from the equator, and the only consistent finding is correlation with lower serum levels of Vitamin D.
There is definitely some Vitamin D from formula, but the AAP does not consider it sufficient unless the infant is getting in about a liter per day (about 33 oz per day). |
We had twins and in the craziness of feeding them, we forgot until many months had passed. It turned out okay. They are teens now and I hadn't experienced any problems. |
Just start now |
Since the baby is getting formula, no harm. |
I did the exact same thing with my second baby. It was even “worse” because she refused all formula. She is 5 now, completely fine, and super healthy. Just start giving them now and don’t beat yourself up. |
Not unless they are getting the equivalent of at least five six-ounce bottles of formula a day. https://healthychildren.org/English/ages-stages/baby/feeding-nutrition/Pages/Vitamin-Iron-Supplements.aspx |
There's really no need to be so rigid about it. Nobody had the drops 30 years ago and the incidents of rickets were almost non-existent except among babies who never saw the sun. |
I was told to do this but never did. |
