PAC at FCPS

My 3 yo DD will be starting the Preschool Autism Class later this month. Wondering what everyone's experience has been with this program. Thank you!

Wonderful. Those teachers are great with the kids.

My DS wasn't in the PAC but in the non-cat classroom. It was amazing and I have no doubt the teachers and assistants in the PAC classroom are just as amazing. They are highly trained and there are very low ratios of staff to students. With transportation provided and at no cost, wow! What's not to love about it?!

I did have some initial concerns that my DS would pick up some negative behaviors from other kids but those fears were unfounded. Any negative behaviors were appropriately dealt with by the staff. I don't know if the PAC has 'peer models' included. Our non-cat classroom did and sometimes it took a while to identify which was the kid with the IEP and which was the peer model.

My DC started PAC on their 3rd birthday. I loved it. I met other parents with kids like mine and my son was part of a group. Also, PAC really helped get the IEP and accommodations for kindergarten in place well in advance.

My DC was informally considered a peer model. Not being diagnosed Autistic but needing intensive language support, he showed typical emotional reactions, positive and negative, in social situations and loved routine while not being overly inflexible.

He's now in 3rd grade and no longer in PAC. Some of the behaviors did stress him out and made it hard for him to focus and his teacher determined that the structure and routine of the larger class was better for him. He gets support with a couple of HFA kids with an IA.

But he still visits his PAC buddies at the end of the day before dismissal, mostly because the SPED team at our school is awesome and knows he's been with some of kids since PAC and they enjoy seeing each other.

PP...I should say his "Enhanced Autism (EA)" buddies, since that is the name of the class in K-6.

My 2 year old started PAC in August. We've had a really good experience. The teacher communicates well and the bus drivers are great.
