| I felt like a piece of my 1980s childhood died today. Was the first comedy special I watched on TV, probably around the age of 7. |
| Aw. I used to listen to his album, on cassette, all the time. |
Same. |
| Gallagher Mad As Hell. |
| I loved Gallagher! My mom and I used to watch his shows on TV. I remember the big tricycle, the sledge o matic, and all his wordplay jokes…. I still tease my kids with, why do you wear a pair of pants but only one bra?! Why do you drive on a parkway and park in a driveway?? RIP. |
| Who? |
| That is a shame. One of my favorite childhood comedians. RIP |
| Aw, I got to see him at a private corporate event. So much fun! |
|
| He is one of those celebrities that you thought already passed a long time ago. When was the last time his name has even come up? |
|
I saw him live this century.
Mean. Hated his audience. Bombing for what felt like hours and just bitter the whole time. GREAT EXPERIENCE! |
Apparently he turned pretty racist and homophobic in his later years. From Rolling Stone https://www.rollingstone.com/tv-movies/tv-movie-news/gallagher-watermelon-smashing-comedian-bigoted-jokes-dead-1234629556/amp/ Gallagher himself was still performing regularly, though, at this time, his act began to take a hard right turn. In 2010, the Seattle-based alt-weekly The Stranger published a review of a Gallagher show, describing the comedian as a “paranoid, delusional, right-wing religion maniac.” The piece documented a set filled with xenophobic and racist jokes (including several directed at then-president Barack Obama), as well as a plethora of homophobic bits. At one point, Gallagher even reportedly encroached on serious white supremacy territory, proclaiming, “We’re descended from an Anglo-Saxon Viking tradition.” |
