High school Spanish course progression

Why does MCPS not offer Spanish 5 as an honors class? Is there an expectation that honors level students will instead take AP? For my son, this would mean taking AP as a sophomore.

I don't know why they don't label it as Honors, but Spanish 5 is an Advanced Level class, and they earn the same additional quality points that Honors, AP, and IB classes do.

My kid took AP Spanish as a sophomore. Is there a reason not to? She’s in Spanish 6 now. She got a 5 on the AP but we figured if she didn’t she could just retake it after Spanish 6. It’s really nice to have one out of the way given everything going on junior year spring.

My dd is in Spanish 4 as a freshman, as a sophomore should she take Spanish 5 or AP Spanish?

Depends on the kid. Do they want to have the same FL all 4 years of HS or switch? Are they having an easy time in Spanish 4? Can they speak in Spanish comfortably? Spaish 5 in our school focuses on speaking.

Their current teacher should be making a recommendation for next year.
