Tell me about SSIMS

It's a large school with a large catchment area, so there are many different stories to tell. They have had two open-house-like activities this month (one with students, one without), but it has still been very hard to get a read on the school. I am particularly interested in / concerned about the consideration of the kids as individuals in a non-specialized, non-magnet environment.

I've had 2 kids at SSIMS, and we liked it. It is a large school, but we found it to be warm and engaged community, with a lot of great teachers and staff. The biggest downsides are the middle school curriculum itself, which is the same (for the most part) across MCPS. There didn't seem to be a lot of challenging assignments, aside from math. It has a large number of elective classes, and the block schedule means most kids get two elective slots in their schedule.
