Random vm from new car owner

Anonymous
We bought a preowned Mercedes from MB last year, as the delivery of the new car we had ordered had been delayed indefinitely. This summer the new car was available so we traded in the one we had owned for less than a year. Yesterday I got a voicemail from a guy who said that he thinks he bought our old car, and he needs to talk to me about it...we bought it from the Mercedes car dealership, and sold it back to them, we had no interaction whatsoever with this guy who now has tracked me down randomly. I assume he's only calling because he's got some problem with the car, but either way I'm not interested in speaking to him. WWYD?

Is there any chance he found some belonging of yours in the car and is trying to return it? Something small that could have fallen and been hidden in between the seats, like a small piece of jewelry or something?

Sounds scammy. How would he have your contact info?

Did you remember to wipe all of your data off of the computer/nav system.

I would find out what he has to say. He already knows your number so you can’t put that genie back in the bottle and as someone said, he might have something of yours.

+1

You should contact the dealership and see if they gave your information to the new owner, or if they could be the middleman in case they are legit.

Just ignore the vm and any follow up calls. Whatever question or issue he is having has nothing to do with you. And if they catch you on the phone because you answer their call simply say "I don't know you, stop calling" and hang up!

I would ignore.

This is a stretch, and if it were true I think most people would simply return said item to the dealership instead of trying to track down the prior owner themselves - that's creepy

Why wouldn't get explain why he's calling you in the VM? That to me is the reason I wouldn't call back.

voicemail would have indicated that they found something of yours. go to dealer and have them call him while you are there.

I would want everything to be over text or email. Or have the dealership handle it. But if you have a text from them then they'll have to put it in writing

call the dealer and have them reach out to the person. no need to for you to call.

OP - he said that he believed he now owns a car we sold and that he has questions about the car

OP - thanks, I guess I could respond via text but I really have no interest in interacting with him.
