Infertility Support and Discussion
| Can anyone tell me about their experience with Provera to start your cycle? Does it actually get you to ovulate or just causes you to bleed/have a period? I had a shot of MTX about 5 wks ago for an ectopic and OB has been monitoring since and we have seen no ovulation (which means no period for at least another 2 weeks, which would bring me to 7 weeks since the bleeding started). She said if I wanted, I could try Provera for 5 days and get my period that way, or we can just keep waiting? What would you do? Does the Provera affect future fertility? I have seen online in places that it may contribute to birth defects. I'm so confused. I feel like I already had this drastic drug (MTX) put into my body, should I just let it do it's thing? Or if you've been ttc for a long time, would you just want that period to come faster so you can start again? And does taking the Provera get you back on track with ovulation and periods going forward? Or is it just going to bring that one period after you take it and your body could still be messed up? |
| i can only tell you my experience but i hope it helps. after a missed mc/d&c in feb i didn't get a period for 9-10 weeks. my cycles before the pregnancy were regular for 6 months after coming off the pill (and had never been irregular in the past). my doc prescribed prometrium (a more 'natural' form of progesterone than provera, i believe), which i took for 12 days and then got a period. it does NOT make you ovulate. the hope in a situation like this is that it kick starts your system back into gear. it seems to have worked thus far for me as i just got a normal period a month after the prometrium-induced one. i hope that helps! |
| PP - Did your OB tell you not to ttc this past cycle (the one in which you got a normal period post-prometrium)? Or you just happened not to? |

PP here - we actually did but it didn't take (weren't charting or anything and wasn't too disappointed to see AF as i wasn't sure my body/mind were totally ready etc). my OB said it was fine to try, though thought it might be easier if my body had its first post-mc period on its own first. your OB can do a scan to see if your lining has built up at all, meaning a period may be coming?
i've heard nothing about provera being dangerous. progesterone is actually often prescribed, i believe, to pregnant women to help SUSTAIN the pregnancy if they've had low progesterone in the past. i know a lot of women with PCOS are given it regularly. |
