What to do with my car??

Anonymous
Guys, looking for ideas on what to do. Here is the situation. I have a 2005 Pathfinder with ONLY 105k miles. Everything is pretty good shape except the overdrive gear is not engaging. We have 4 cars (only two drivers) and I don't really need to keep it. So, what should I do with it? I doubt CarMax will buy it from me due to the transmission issue. I suppose I can put it on the Craigslist (even though I am not looking forward to dealing with strangers). Or I can donate or take it to junk yard (and get $500). I'd like to get something out of it because, honestly, other than one issue, it is still relatively low miles/clean. Thoughts?

What's blue book on it?

Get it fixed then sell it.

Carmax might still buy it regardless of the transmission issue. Give them a try. The worst thing could happen is that they say no.

Donate it. Many nonprofit organizations use a program that will fix it, sell it, and get the money (minus cost of repairs) to the organization.

NPR does this, as do many smaller local organizations

previous poster here, you can also donate it to the HS program that teaches students how to fix cars. The students fix them, and sell them 3 times a year with funds going back to the school program

Donate- transmission work will be more than value of car.

Yep. I bet they will buy it and sell it at auction.

Fix and sell or donate to the local school. We donated ours to Edison HS in Wheaton.

Thanks guys. I see no consensus on this. I really do not want to put in thousands fixing it. The hassle and I don’t know if the car is worth that much. CarMax sounds like my first stop.

Just vet the organizations your considering donating too, though. Apparently there are some “pre-k education charities” and the like that keep the money for themselves. If you Google you can find articles on this.

I donated a car through NPR. It was a great experience.
