| I hear that Churchill is one of the few schools that offer 9th graders APUSH. For those with kids at the school, are most taking the AP or the Honors version of US History? How are the kids finding APUSH? Is it manageable? |
| I'm not sure why you would want your kids in APUSH in 9th. AP NSL is easier, and you have to take it eventually anyway. |
That is why I said at Churchill HS. No choice. Their system is reverse from all the other schools in MCPS that I know of. |
| My kids took APUSH at Churchill and didn’t find it too hard. One is very stem focused and even he found it doable. Both got 5’s on the exam too. |
I always hear students complain about it so this is good to hear. |
| If it makes you feel any better, my DD took 9th grade APUSH at another school and only scored a 3. It was still a good experience for her. She loved the class and gained a firm foundation for future History/Social Science APs, which were all 5’s. |
| My 9th grader took APUSH at another MCPS HS and did fine. And really enjoyed the class. |
| Niece in VA (Richmond, not NOVA) also took APUSH as a freshman while our kids in MoCo took it as sophomores |
That's so odd! So you don't even have the option of switching it? |
No. |
| My kid is in 9th grade at a different MCPS school where the sequence is to have 9th graders take US history. There are two sections of APUSH, so about 60 kids out of 450 in the grade take it. I thought it was strange to have as a 9th grade class, but so far it’s going fine for my kid. |
| It seems like most HS prefer AP NSL in 9th and APUSH in 10th but a few like Churchill and Blair are reversed. I'm guessing there may be a reason but many have said having AP NSL in 9th is preferable since APUSH is a harder course. |
I thought curriculums should align throughout the school system. What happens if a student moves to a new high school area or boundaries are changed? |
Is there an option of taking regular or honors US History in 9th grade then taking APUSH later? It seems students would do better with a foundation course before taking the AP course. |
Curriculums are aligned, general course sequences don't need to be. If a student goes to a different high school they will just be placed in the appropriate class that they are currently taking or the next one they need to take. So they could be in 9th grade taking a class with mostly 10th graders, or vice versa. NBD. |
