| Was anyone a cheerleader in middle school or high school? Just curious what you thought of your experience as an adult now. Thanks |
This is my research as a parent who was an orchestra nerd and who has no clue about whether cheerleading would be a good thing or a bad thing. |

I was a cheerleader in high school. I lived in West Texas so football and cheerleading were big. I was not popular and was actually nerdy. I made the team because I was a great tumbler.
Pros: I went to school sports and was much more involved than I would have been without cheerleading. I would have never gone to volleyball games or pep rallies or homecoming parades. I became close with the sponsor of the team who wrote a lovely college recommendation. (I went to UT Austin). I also became friendly (not necessarily friends) with girls I never would have. Cons: Lots of teenage girl drama. Though that’s everywhere. I just didn’t have a big circle of friends so this was new to me. Some teachers also stereotyped me as a dumb cheerleader. Well, I took 4 APs senior year while cheering varsity and did well. So jokes on them. Happy to answer specific questions. I’m |
I didn't think of the dumb stereotype. I usually think cheerleaders are popular, cheerful and spirited. I don't have any specific questions. I just have a girl who wants to cheer and loves tumbling and likes the girl group dynamics. I want her to practice a musical instrument and play golf. But she's very sociable. |
I’m the PP cheerleader. Many of the girls I cheered with have quite impressive careers now. At least 2 lawyers, one doctor and one orthodontist. That is out of a squad of 12. Can she not do both? I was actually a viola player as well. I played in the symphony orchestra and cheered. My dad hates I was a cheerleader but I’m thankful he let me do it. It definitely pushed me out of my comfort zone in a good way. |
Yes, I was thinking that cheer would help her tap into being more outgoing or have a positive mindset. Well it's nice that your dad let you and you had a mostly good experience. Thanks for the feedback! |
| I was a cheerleader in middle school. It wasn't the popular girls who were necessarily cheerleaders where I lived. We cheered for boys football. Nobody went to football games. Basketball and soccer were more popular and nobody went to those either. Looking back I wish I'd used my time better. I was so uncomfortable in the short skirts and just ... thought it was as close as I could get to gymnastics (my parents wouldn't pay for that anymore). The girls on the team kind of got along but we all stayed friends with whoever we were previously friends with. |
| It is school dependent. Some schools have awesome cheer programs and the girls are very athletic and dedicated. Other schools, it is more fun, less sport. |
| I was a cheerleader in highschool and college. There was no snark / drama / pressure to be skinny etc in HS. It was just fun for people that like doing dance / stunts / tumbling. I’m sure I’m some regions of the country it’s a different story |
|
I was cheerleader in MS/HS. It was good for me as it helped me meet a lot of kids I wouldn’t have otherwise. There was a lot of girl drama but I was able to stay out of most of it.
TBH both DH and I steered our girls away from cheer and gymnastics. |
| Cheerleader in HS (didn't have at my MS), embarrassed about it now and would not allow our daughter to be a cheerleader. |
| I was a professional cheerleader in the NFL. It actually serves me very well in the workplace. I used to perform for 75k people, I don’t bat an eye at public speaking. Unless you’re anti-women’s sports (and yes dance and cheerleading are one of them), I have no idea why this would be an issue. |
+1 it’s not very becoming |
It's a very competitive sport nowadays where people train for HS squads starting in elementary. You can't just start cheer in 9th grade when everyone else trying out for the team has been in cheer-style gymnastics and tumbling classes since 4rd grade. Seems ridiculous, but that's how it is at many schools. These girls practice at special gyms just for cheer, even at the middle school level. Not to be discouraging, just realistic. Of course at some schools the cheer team environment is more relaxed. Also there is a real possibility of serious injuries if the teams are very intense and doing competition level routines. |
| Very barking. Very objectifying body with scimpy outfit. |
