The "suburban Virginia" school mentioned in Act One of This American Life is Yorktown High:
https://www.thisamericanlife.org/783/kids-these-days It describes the student and parent perspective (dad and his two daughters) on the lockdown that Yorktown had in February. |
I had to stop it b/s it was too stressful. My kid was in there and I know they were OK, but the whole thing sucked.
Also, this is why i pop into threads and say I tell my HS kid to keep their phone in their bag. |
Same. I was standing outside that building with my anxiety ratched up to 11. My DD was able to text me from her math class to let me know she was okay -- but also that she was huddling behind a wall of desks and that 2 older students were holding her hands. We were all a wreck. |
My now Junior was in K when Newtown happened. Same grade and age as those kids. A week after the massacre I was at home in Alexandria working on my yard on a random weekday when a gazillion sirens fire up and cops start flying down the street. I ran to the school convinced someone was shooting all the kids. Trauma- even if it isn't 100% yours- is a wild thing. |
