I grew up in Fairfax county (Chantilly) but have lived away for the two decades. My partner and I are considering moving back to get closer to family and have been looking at Vienna/ Oakton as it fits our budget and needs but I’m stumped by the pools/ swim clubs. seems most neighborhoods don’t have pools as part of HOA and all the swim clubs seems to have 5+year wait lists.
Summertime and pool/swim team was such a big part of my elementary school age childhood but it feels like my kids would be in middle school before we get in. Is this just an issue of supply and demand? Can anyone local give me run down of how it works - are these waits really that long, any alternative, magical ways to join? ( sorta kidding) |

Get on the waitlist for an August pass.
Buy a house that comes with a membership (many pools allow members to sell their memberships with their homes). Those are you options to get in sooner. |
| There are a couple neighborhood pools like Shouse Village. Join Westwood or Riverbend as a social member. Or join Reston Association. |
| We joined Hunter Mill Swim and Tennis Club and have only lived here a year. |

There’s more than one summer swim league out that way, right? Northern VA (NVSL) and Colonial (CSL)?
(Correct me if I’m wrong … I don’t live in VA!) I’d hit up the leagues’ Web sites, find pools near where you want/expect to be, and contact each to see the waitlist situation. That’s what we did for MCSL when we joined. |
| I think you are giving the expected time frame to be offered a membership but you can also rent them. Get on the lists -several of them - and within about a year you’ll probably be offered august rental and within 2-3 full season rental. |
| Depending on where you buy in the area, Hunter Mill and McLean Swim and Tennis generally both have immediate availability. The downside is that it won't be kids from your neighborhood, but that's just the way it is with waitlists. |

Lakevale Estates is a nice neighborhood in Vienna with a HOA pool and swim team.

| +1 on Lakevale. You could attempt the country club route. By the time you are off the waitlist, your kids will be grown. |
| If you're willing to live a little further out, Franklin Farm east of Fairfax Country Parkway is zoned for Oakton HS. Two pools and a swim team. All residents are eligible to be pool and swim team members for a relatively small fee. |
| Country Club Pool is nice and lots of Vienners go there. Cchpool.com |
| Got on the waitlist for oakton swim and tennis and paid them 250 when child was 6 months, wife thought I was insane. Wait time is 5 to 7 years so it should work out for us. |
| Unless you move into a neighborhood with a pool (Lakevale or Shouse) you have to get on the waitlist. Do it now and hope for the best. We are members of Dunn Loring and were told its about a 2-3 year wait to get a full summer rental and about 5+ years to get become a full member. As a full summer rental, your child can still join the swim team. You can not if you are August only. |
| Bumping this thread. Are there any swim clubs with an indoor pool? |
