Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS)
| I am new to the area- My address is saying ds should go to Freedom hill elementary but can I choose to go to Haycock? I am not sure how this works? TIA |
| No, you cannot chose your elementary school in Fairfax County. Children identified as gifted (in 2nd grade, I believe) can choose to attend a local GT center, which Haycock is one of, alongside it's regular school program. But I don't think Freedom Hill gifted kids would go to Haycock because it's in the Marshall high school pyramid and Haycock feeds into McLean high. |

Gifted kids at Freedom Hill can do one of two things:
|
| how is freedom hill? |
|
We LOVE Freedom Hill. It is our first year there (we moved to the area last year.) We truly lucked out, in that the house we found was in the Freedom Hill boundary. We are in Town of Vienna, so while most FH kids end up at Marshall, my kids will end up at Madison.
The school has just finished up with a multi-year renovation, and the teaching and professional staff are top notch. One day a few months into the school year (our first year at this school), I was talking with my 3d grader and made reference to her "old" school and her "new" school (with the new school being FH). She was very adament to me that FH is her SCHOOL, not her "new" school. She adjusted very well. Both of my kids love FH. The school is very diverse, the people have been very welcoming, and like I said, we are quite impressed with the staff and the education our kids are receiving at FH. I encourage you to contact the school, meet with the principal and learn more about FH first hand. |
Boundaries in Vienna are a bit strange. Only about 15% of the Freedom Hill ES students are from the Town of Vienna, and go on to Thoreau MS and Madison HS. All the other Freedom Hill students go to Kilmer MS and Marshall HS. In comparsion, all the in-boundary Haycock students are assigned to Longfellow MS and McLean HS. |
| Also a Freedom Hill ES parent and love it. I'm in Freedom Hill/Kilmer/Marshall. For now anyway. FPCS can and will change school boundaries, and who knows where my kid will be going in 7 years when they start HS. Or if we will even be in NOVA for that matter! |
If you're in the part of Freedom Hill that's zoned for Kilmer and Marshall, your chances of getting redistricted in the future are close to nil. And, in 7 years, Marshall will have been substantially renovated. |
And ditto if you're in Town of Vienna and go to Freedom Hill: Town of Vienna kids go to Thoreau and Madision... with no likelihood of getting redistricted elsewhere. |
20:35 here - strikes me that it's possible that the kids from the Town of Vienna assigned to Freedom Hill might be reassigned to Vienna ES at some point, since the projections are that Vienna ES will be under-capacity and Freedom Hill will be over-enrolled in a few years. However, in either case, they'd stay at Thoreau/Madison. |
