We attended the smacs open house at Blair and we were confused about the science classes.
In 9th grade, physics and chemistry must be taken. Is that two different classes for the ninth grade year,or one semester classes ie first semester is physics and second semester is chemistry? In 10th grade, earth space systems and biology are both required, same question….are they EACH two semesters long, or is earth space systems offered the first semester and biology is offered the second semester for a total of one year. Hope what I wrote made sense. TIA! |
| Physcs and Chem are both 1 semester long (condensed versions). I think bio was a whole year but I do not remember earth/space so maybe it changed. Someone else will chime in. |
| Yes, 9th grade takes 1 semester of Chem and 1 semester of Physics (whole year condensed into a semester.. 10th grade they take Bio for the whole year and Earth science for 1 semester. |
| It’s great. Some 11/12 grade, almost all your classes are electives, magnet electives. |
| Come not some….. |
What is taken for the other semester after earth science? |
PVHS SMCS 10th is whole year Bio and whole year AP Environmental Science. I thought Blair was supposed to be the same. |
I thought it was earth space systems, not ap environmental science? |
| Poolesville and Blair are not exactly the same. I didn’t now the science was different but I did know that Blair’s magnet precal is done in a year and a half, and poolesvilles takes 2 years. |
| Blair is the original and Poolesville is the copy. |
| Blair does not do AP classes in the magnet.. The kids take the magnet tests for Comp Sci, Math & some of the science, but nothing is ‘AP’. Obviously people take AP English and History and Foreign Lang, etc….. |
| The other class taken after Earth science is the Tech credit : Foundations of Engineering & Tech |
Foundations of Technology A |
Physics is 1st semester in 9th grade. It is a compacted class worth 1 credit hour. Chemistry is 2nd semester and also is a compacted class. There is a second class that operates like the lab both semesters. It's worth .25 credit per semester I think. Bio is all year in 10th -- no separate lab. Earth/Space science is one semester and also one credit hour. |
Last I knew yes, physics and chem were 1 semester each and so was earth science in 10th but bio was 1 year long. It involved 2.5 years of science over the first two years to prepare students for the deeper electives available in 11th and 12th grade. |
