Maybe a stupid question, sorry.
I feel like it’s a bit unfair to give a kid a test with no clue what kind of questions they’re going to be taking, but I don’t want to break the rules. I haven’t seen anything about a prohibition on sample questions but I want to be sure it’s okay before I do so. This wouldn’t be a test prep course or anything, just showing DS what kinds of questions are on the test. |
This is like asking for help on an eye test or hearing test. It is what it is. Either they understand the questions or they don’t. Relax. Gifted programs really don’t give all that much ”extra” enrichment these days anyway. |
Yes, they actually do some samples in class in 2nd grade to get familiar with the instructions. There are plenty of prep books on Amazon and my kid enjoyed looking at the questions. No idea if he did well this year but that wasn’t my purpose - DS is a student who bugs the teacher with a million questions during tests and I wanted to try and head it off. |
Thank you! I don’t know what the teacher has done but I suspect not much because not very many kids are taking it in fifth. In our school (and maybe others) they give it in third and then in fifth if the kids didn’t take it in third, and DS was homeschooled in third. I admit I do care a bit what score he gets just because this is the only standardized test score they will use for math placement (unless they use fifth grade SOLs). He wasn’t enrolled or was absent for all other tests. He really is a STEM kid and I’d like him to be able to be on the advanced track. But obviously in the grand scheme of things this is not a big deal. My biggest reason for wanting to give him a heads up is that, as far as I know, all his other standardized tests have been multiple choice and it would be nice to know that this is a totally different kind of test. |
Cogat is not typically used for math placement… math inventory is. The math inventory is performed multiple times in the classroom throughout the year. |
^ they also use SOLs. We received a letter that had them math inventory score, SOL score and what the placement is. |
Cogat is also used for math placement. It is the third score they look at, after looking at SOL and MI. If your kid is on the edge it can be a factor. |
DS’s teacher said they might use fifth grade SOLs, but they might not. Same with fall math inventory. They only do math inventory twice a year, spring and fall, and DS wasn’t given the fall assessment. I don’t know, maybe the teacher was wrong. Regardless, they do use the cogat. But again this isn’t a big deal. I’m sure they will put him in whatever math class is best. |
Your can find sample questions online. I showed my kid some because she likes to know what to expect. |
We bought a book online. |
There are sample questions embedded into the testing sessions. Please don't buy practice books for your kids; the test is supposed to measure ability, not learned achievement. |
Go to Lotte and you will find practice books for sale. |
So many people doing it, you are at a disadvantage if you don’t. It’s just the truth. |
We did too. The questions in the workbook are much simpler than the test but they do give an idea of the format of the questions which was helpful. |
I don’t live in the area but we used https://www.testprep-online.com/. I liked the fact that it gives an explanation for why each answer choice is correct or incorrect. |
