| I’m contemplating moving from a different district to MCPS, where I live. It would be a pay cut, but a huge trade off would be bringing my own children to school with me even if it’s not their assigned school. Is this a thing? What a great (free) perk that would be for teacher parents to not have to worry about before/ after care. |

Well teachers at Stonemill Elementary did this for years and years.
It was a horrible idea. |
| Really, can I ask why? |
|
Are you asking whether teachers' children are allowed to attend a school outside of their residential cluster, because their parent works at that school?
The answer is no. However if you pick up your kids from their school, and bring them to your school, for PTA meetings, and other evening activities like STEM Night, that is perfectly allowed. I was on the PTA board and we had free childcare for evening activities, for all parents, teachers included. |
| I would think it would be a school by school basis and very dependent on what the principal says I know of two friends in MCPS who do this. |

You have to get a COSA (Change of School Assignment). These are reasonable to come by for elementary school. Not a guarantee, but you might get it. They are much harder for middle/high school.
A friend of mine had a COSA for her kids to attend the elementary school where she taught. They did not get the COSA for middle in this cluster (even tho the younger child got it to stay at Mom's elementary). They ended up moving the younger child to their home cluster so he would make some friends before moving to middle because older kid had a bit of a rocky adjustment. |
Meaning, please do not depend on getting a COSA. |
She also said, "from another district" So I'm not sure if you can COSA from one county to another? I dont believe you can |
No, you can't from another county. A friend who moved (out of county) but was still working for MCPS had to withdraw her child from the school she was working at.

| I do live in Montgomery County, but I don’t teach here. Thanks all! |

The student transfer policy includes this language:
MCPS Staff (1) Consistent with MCPS strategic priorities to encourage and support school-based staff who work in Title I Schools, Innovative School Year Calendar Schools, or Focus Schools, staff based in any one of those schools may request a transfer for their own child to attend the school which they work under the following conditions: (a) The staff member is assigned to work in one of the above referenced schools for the upcoming school year in a budgeted full-time equivalent (FTE) position that is eligible for leave, retirement, and health benefits coverage; and (b) The staff member is a Montgomery County resident, and the student is otherwise eligible to enroll in MCPS; and (c) The request is accompanied by a plan for childcare or other supervision during all times during the staff member’s duty day. (2) If the student’s enrollment in the school in which the staff member works becomes an impediment to the staff member’s ability to perform their duties satisfactorily, the student transfer may be rescinded. (3) The superintendent of schools may establish a process and timeline for consideration of such requests, as well as limit eligibility based on staff performance or conduct concerns. (4) MCPS staff who do not work in one of the schools identified in this section may otherwise apply for COSAs for their children in accordance with requirements of this policy and related regulations. https://ww2.montgomeryschoolsmd.org/departments/policy/pdf/jee.pdf |
| For COSa, I know they take into consideration other issues—for instance I knew someone whose spouse had a disability and would not nr able to pick up the kids so she got a cosa to bring them to the school near her office so she could get them before after care closed. But I think it would be tough to drag kids across the county to go to school where a parent works. |
She said she is thinking of moving from a teaching job in another district because she lives in MCPS. Her kids live in MCPS. |
| I know of a few teachers at our school with COSA for their elementary students to attend where they work. They still need before and aftercare though for meetings and the kid can not stay in cluster for middle school. |
| This happened at our school (Dufief). A teacher’s kid was allowed to go to our school because she asked. The kid attended the school and also sat in on all of the parent teacher conferences - total violation of privacy. And completely unacceptable. But sure, go ahead. |
