3 year old wakes up violently confused

Anonymous
My son is 3 now. Since about 1yr of age, usually when napping during the daytime but sometimes at night as well, he wakes up very suddenly and will spend several minutes seemingly completely disconnected from his surroundings. Sometimes he's angry and violent, other times he's crying inconsolably, and sometimes mobile but utterly confused like says he has to pee, while crying but then tries to pee on the wall as if he was in front of the toilet (fully potty trained, no accidents). Is this normal?

Low blood sugar? You could try a little juice when he first wakes up.

Night terrors. Mine had them around that age and outgrew them by around kindergarten. It usually happened when she was overtired. Google it but they’re not really awake. It is awful and horrifying when they’re happening.

Yeah. It actually helps my daughter a lot when i just sit there and keep saying, "you had a bad dream and sometimes they feel really scary and real." still takes a while to calm down but eventually that helps her connect to what happened.

They wake up scared and dont know why and its very confusing and scary for them.
