When calculating the semester grade for a class, do they average the letter grades for two quarters (B & A comes to A), or do they average each numerical grade value (80 & 90 comes to 85, which is still a B)?
|
B & A comes to A |
|
There's a chart showing how the semester grades are calculated on page 4 here:

| According to my son, they're going to change it next year to average the numerical grade value. |
What is your son’s source for this info? I’m a HS teacher and haven’t heard this, though I hope it’s true. |
That is going to be huge if true. |

| C + C = A |
Next year's plan! |
Neither. The semester grade is the the higher quarter grade. A plus B equals A. |
I don’t understand the logic of this. Can someone please explain? |
The averaged the “quality points”. (4 + 3)/2 = 3.5 , round up to 4 = A |
So if a kid gets an 80, and then a 90, it’s an A? And if they get an 89 and a 100, it’s basically the same A? |
Yes. |
