My 16 year old has ADHD and also anxiety--lately manifesting itself as test-taking anxiety.
If this was us your kid, what med(s) did you find work best? Thank yiu!! |
| Vyvanse. |
17 year old is on Adderall + Prozac for the anxiety. Anxiety is still there but has decreased a good bit. She is on 20mg Prozac and doesn’t want to increase the dosage. |
| Mine is on Zoloft and Qelbree (nonstimulant) |
| Vyvanse and Zoloft. |
| Zoloft and Adderall |
First Vyvanse poster. Mine also takes Zoloft and Lamictal. |
| Cotempla (a methylphenidate class med that causes less anxiety than other stimulants) and cymbalta |
| Guanfacine - entire dose taken at night. |
|
Vyvanse during the day, plus Adderall if they need it for evening activities.
For my kid, the anxiety decreased a lot once the attention issues were mitigated. They can follow conversations so the social anxiety is lessened, they worry less about being called on in class because they’re pretty sure they’ll know what the teacher is talking about, and they’re more confident they won’t be exhausted from trying to focus before they get to the end of a test. |

My daughter - most people thought the anxiety was the big issue for her and not her “mild” inattentive adhd. I’m glad I listened to our doctor and started her on adhd meds first - it solved most of her anxiety and mood issues. The stress of being confused all the time gave her anxiety, it turns out.
She took Concerta, then Adderall ER. Both similar (adderall is easier to get so we went with that) |
+1 |
| For those of you with kids on non-stimulants, did you try those first? Have our first psychiatrist appointment coming up and just wondering what to expect. Our ped said they almost always start with stimulants but I’m so nervous because my kid is already so anxious any worsening at all will be hard to handle in some situations. |
Stimulants first. Then when anxiety hit, changed to nonstimulant meds. They didn’t work and his anxiety went through the roof. That led to self medication which opened a whole new can of worms. Went back to stimulants and added Zoloft and his condition improved immensely. |
| Adderall and Prozac. We also had adjust expectations and courseload. She is gifted, but not capable of a traditional gifted courseload. She functions much better with some challenge, but not too much. She also doesn't do well about competitiveness. Honors and AP pushed the anxiety over the edge into paralysis. It was combo of meds and class changes that did the trick. |
