For some reason, now that I am older, spending 2-3 hours on my feet (like shopping or spending time in a museum) just kills me. It is like my feet ache and I would pay someone a lot just to sit down and take weight off of them.
Does anyone know what causes this? |
I have it in my hips and knees.

I pass out if I stand too long. Low BP. |
I think a lot of it has to do with a combination of arthritis and wearing the wrong kind of shoes.
I find if I wear a pair of lightweight hiking-type shoe with ankle support when doing a lot of walking it makes a big difference. My go-to is Merrell but there are plenty of brands out there. |
Thank you. It is not a sharp pain in one place. It is like my feet just can’t support me any longer. I need to put them up and rest them. They just a ache, so maybe arthritis? Standing seems worse than walking. Old age #ucks ☹️ |
It makes me want to tell younger people…don’t wait too long to retire. Because doing what you enjoy (like taking trips, hiking, museums) may not be an option forever. |
I am mid-50s and have had this problem for years. But I can walk great distances. Better shoes have helped. And I am with 22:38 about retirement, and I give exactly this reason for wanting to retire sooner rather than later. |
Haha I’ve always been like this, I thought it was normal. I remember being 8 years old at a summer camp and just wanting to sit down. |
Are you in shape, OP? |
No. I sit in an office most days, and am somewhat overweight (not excessively so). The foot pain comes when I push myself, like on weekends or on vacations. Most recently I walked 5+ miles on each of two days in a rush (sightseeing). |
Sorry, * "in a row" |
Don't go cheap on shoes. Get a shoe with a stiff sole -- if you try to bend the sole, it should have little to no flex. Agree with PP, Merrell, along with Sorrell and Teva are good.
Also, go to your doctor. There may be an underlying issue that can be addressed. You need your feet, so take care of them. |
Check out compression socks..help with circulation and energize legs. Foers has a shop on Wisconsin Ave that specializes. I got mine due to vein issues, but people swear by them. |
Thank you all for your kind suggestions and sage advice.
