| Can you retake only one semester of an HS class for a higher grade during the summer? Does anyone know what that looks like on the transcript? |
Yes. All HS classes are one semester in length. |
The grade for the course is replaced and the date shows summer completion. |
| My son plans to do this for geometry. I do wonder how the colleges will view it if the date shows summer completion but they can see he took the course originally during freshman year. But I guess it’s better than just having the bad grade on the transcript. |
| Does it not show both classes and both grades? I would think there would be an acknowledgment of the replacement. |
No. The grade is just replaced and the date updated to semester the grade was earned. |

Do all MCPS schools allow this?
One of my kids graduated ten years ago so this is old info but they were not allowed to repeat a math class where they earned a D because they had “passed.” It affected their ability to continue math. (They had transferred into MCPS from an out-of-state private school and Richard Montgomery placed him without a placement test, despite our requesting one. He struggled in the class and finally earned a D with a tutor - but wasn’t allowed to repeat in summer school. We were told it was policy. Just wondering if the lousy policy had changed. |
There's a whole lovely website you can look up the policies on. https://ww2.montgomeryschoolsmd.org/departments/policy/pdf/ikara.pdf IKA-RA 12 of 16 J. Retaking a Course or Portion of a Course A student may retake a high school credit-bearing course or a portion of a course, subject to conditions below. Upon successful completion of the course or portion of the course, the grade earned by the student may replace the student’s previous grade as described below. 1. Retaking a course a) A student may retake a high school credit-bearing course, no matter the final grade. b) The highest of the grades earned shall be entered on the student’s transcript by the principal/designee and shall be used for the purpose of computing weighted and unweighted grade point averages. c) Students may only replace a course grade with the grade earned in a course with the same or comparable course code, as authorized by OCIP. |
My daughter is in high school magnet classes, can those classes also be retaken? |
Yes, but it's worth knowing that a handful of colleges ask in the application if the student has ever retaken a class. That doesn't mean it's not best that the student retake the class and get a solid foundation. |
