Do I need to stop swaddling 6 week old who rolls?

Anonymous
My baby is 5 weeks and 6 days. Today she rolled twice during tummy time, tummy to back. Do I really need to stop using swaddles for sleep, knowing she can do this?

I am hoping I can still swaddle since she can't roll back to tummy, and when she's swaddled she is on her back. Does that make sense? It will be hard to get her to sleep without the swaddle. Her older sister was much older when she rolled. Proud of her but a little stunned. Please advise, DCUM!

Yes, you need to stop swaddling. We found something we called the starfish--basically a sleep sack with sealed arms and legs that gave some comfort of swaddle without the rollover risk.

I’ll look into that swaddle - thanks!

Yes!! And it will suck for a couple weeks.

No. Can she do it while swaddled? I am 100% sure she can not.

This is OP. She cannot do it while swaddled as far as I know. That’s why I was asking if it might still be safe to swaddle.

You didn't know she could do it at all, so that's not a good way to gauge.

She will be able to do it soon, the question is how much do you want to risk it?

Ugh, that's what I suspected. I'm just really tired but of course her safety comes first.

Ooof I'm sorry OP that sucks. Both my kids were late rollers and I used that to my advantage in the swaddling game.

With a roller at 6 weeks, I'd seriously consider renting a Snoo for a few months. You can still swaddle a roller in a Snoo.

Try a Merlin sleep suit. It’s not a swaddle but calms the Moro reflex to permit sleep.

Both my kids did some rolls like that early on but it was much longer till they could roll back to front. That takes different strength. So, I kept swaddling til they could do back to front but it’s really a judgment call.

Merlin is also good.

I thought the concern was when they could roll from back to tummy, which usually comes later. My DC, now a toddler, did his first tummy to back roll around 4 weeks but we kept him in his swaddle until he started rolling back to tummy several months later.

And some start rolling both ways quickly. My kids were like this, we had maybe a week between their ability roll both ways.
