Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS)

What is this all about? Yeah, I read the letter, but what is it really? My kindergartener soon-to-be-rising-1st-grader was just invited to participate. Is this something that pretty much all rising 1st graders are invited to participate in? Or is it more for remedial help (or for gifted encouragement)?
We're going to participate, but since we're new to FCPS, I figured I'd ask some of you folks who may know a bit more about it... TIA |
| SOAR is no limited to FCPS -- it's used across the country. |

OP here. I did google search it before posting here, so yes I know it is used all across the country. It was not, however, used in our previous school system so I am unfamiliar with the specifics of the program as it pertains to kids in FCPS. I was wondering whether anyone with a kid at a FCPS who has been involved with SOAR could let me know more about how the program works in FCPS.
Thanks again. |
| We are in FCPS and I have never heard of it. Is it a school based program, a camp or ???? |
OP again. Not really sure. I guess it's a school based program - it is not a camp. We got a letter from the school's SOAR Coordinator (the reading teacher). Each participating child will get three books over the summer to read, along with a postcard (with each book) to mail back to the school. Before school is out for the summer, they'll participate in reading comprehension activities to prepare them for independing reading over the summer. The letter also stated that our child was "nominated" to participate... We sent an email to the teacher to learn more about it, but I assumed some folks here might be able to share more about SOAR before we hear back from the teacher. We're really just curious whether its for all the rising firsts, or just ones who need more encouragement (one way or another), or ???? |
| I never heard of it either. My child is in 2nd grade. |
