In another thread, there was a comment that night-time potty-training should be separate from day-training. I've always heard of it being done all at once, and only heard about the strategy of doing them separately in recent years.
I did both of my girls all at once. I was wondering what were the experiences of other moms. Did you have boys or girls? |
I never even considered night training at the same time as day training. Our son was still in a crib and sleeping 12 hrs a night when we started potty training (around 28 months). No way was I going to mess with that! |
Most kids aren’t developmentally / biophysically ready to nighttrain until 3-4, some are still in pull-ups as old as 7. I trained my kiddo at age 2.5 during the day, caught on in two days and never had an accident. Age 4 now and haven’t tried night training. Pull up is still wet and when I ask if ready to try the reply I get is no. Don’t think kid is ready so not pushing it. |
Daytime train by 26 months. Attempt to nightime train when around 3 1/2 or when the start waking up dry for a few days. |
I've heard that some people do it all at once but that would not have worked for us. (In the book I read, it involved getting your kid up in the middle of the night, at least once a night, to use the potty. No thanks.) |
DS was day potty trained by 29m. But night time wasn't until 4yo. I suspected he was peeing in his diaper when he woke up. So I told him that if he can pee in the potty when he wakes up instead of his diaper he could get (I forget what I used as an incentive). Did that for a few days and he was doing it. |
Day trained at 2.5 but absolutely not rushing on night training. I don't want her waking up at night |
Same -- day trained around 2, and we're staying in pull-ups at night for the foreseeable future. She still has accidents during naps sometimes, although we don't do pull-ups for those and I deal because they're mostly dry, but I'm definitely not pushing overnight any time soon. |
Can Jeff pin a post about Night training? It's like 10 posts a week. |
Nighttime 'training' isn't really a thing...
You can't 'train' someone to do something while they're asleep. Staying dry at night is a purely developmental process. Your child will stay dry at night when their body starts to make enough ADH (anti-diuretic hormone) to concentrate and slow production of urine while they're asleep. If you attempt to 'train' before that happens, you're only going to be causing yourself and your family a bunch of grief. Focus on daytime potty training, and just continue using diapers or pull-ups at night until you notice they start to wake up dry more and more. It will happen with time. |
Waking up a sleeping child in the MOTN for no other reason than to take them to the bathroom is incredibly, mind-numbingly stupid. By doing that, you're 1.) Training them to dependent on others for their bathroom needs 2.) Teaching them that it is 'normal' to wake up in the night to pee (for kids, it is 100% NOT) 3.) Depriving them of a good nights' rest during a critically important developmental phase of their lives Anyone that says it's a good idea to wake up your kid for a bathroom trip is just plain wrong. I started out only doing daytime and left night time for later. My kids had other ideas- both night trained themselves and about a week after starting they were waking up night wanting to pee and not pee in their diapers. I went with it but it suuuuucked and I was not mentally prepared for that. And they were in a crib! Long term it was great, but be prepared. Trained around 22 months, both boys 2 years apart. |
I never trained my daughter to be dry at night - once she was potty trained for the day at 2.5 yo, she was dry at night. But she goes through phases where she wakes up in the middle of the night, a couple of times per months, and wakes me up to wipe her… |
