These are both amazing literature, but for someone just getting interested in reading, I'd go with Gentleman because of its more contemporary style. But A Tree Grows in Brooklyn is probably one of the best books ever written, certainly top 10 ever.

Some of the GR first books I read as an adult were the books that movies were based on. They were adventure books that made for fast paced reading like a movie but more detail. I was generally getting 300 page books and feeling good about myself.
