Middle School Sports

Anonymous
Can someone tell me how sports work in middle school in MCPS? What sports are offered each season, and is it the same for every middle school or do the offerings vary by school? It's very hard to get this info from MCPS's website.

Thanks!

Visit the Athletics page of the website of the middle school that you are zoned for. Start there. You will see what sports and when they are offered in the year. Some sports (soccer, basketball, etc.) are competitive but most are no-cut. There are also intramurals sports (you just need to show up on designated days to play with ad-hoc teams for that day).

You just named the only sports PP and even cross-country is not no cut at DC's MS. 100 kids tried out for fall sports this year.

At our school sports practice T/W/Th after school. Clubs also meet T/W/Th after school. I don't know the rules about attending sports practices, but it seems like kids are expected to go to every practice, so if they do a sport they can't do a club during that season. For this reason, our kid prefers to do sports outside of school.

At our school sports are only for 7th-8th graders, not for grade 6.

Middle school sports are a joke. It’s a just a small level above intramurals. Softball for boys? Give me a break. We have relatives just over the line in Delaware and they have tackle football for middle schools played in high school stadiums in front of big crowds.

I don’t understand why the sports program is so tiny in MS.

Probably because they are not equipped with full size running track and football field.

When I was in MS, we used to walk as a group to a neighboring school that could accommodate our track team. There were no cuts for any MS and HS sports. It’s too bad there seems to be a Hunger Games dynamic at mcps, for sports and magnet programs. The scarcity seems unnecessary and preventable.
